When planning our trip to Stockholm in September 2024, we debated whether to purchase the Stockholm Travelcard. After using them for three days, we quickly realised they were a fantastic investment. Here is why we believe Stockholm travelcards are worth it and how they can enhance your travel experience.
Stockholm travelcards offer unlimited travel on the city’s extensive public transport network, including trams, metro, buses, and even boats. They come in various durations to suit different traveling needs:
We found that the travelcards quickly paid for themselves. For example, the 72-hour card allowed us unlimited travel across the city. Therefore it was easy to explore without worrying about individual ticket costs. With a travelcard, you can hop on and off any public transport without the hassle of buying tickets each time. This was particularly useful for us as we navigated between the Best Attractions in Stockholm.
The travelcards cover all types of transport in Stockholm, including trams, metro, buses, and boats. This extensive coverage made it easy for us to visit various parts of the city seamlessly. Stockholm’s public transport is known for being clean and punctual. We were impressed by the cleanliness of the vehicles and the politeness of the staff, which made our journeys pleasant and stress-free.
Hovever, they might not be cost-effective for very short stays or if you plan to walk or cycle most of the time but for most tourists, the convenience and savings make them a worthwhile investment.
Moreover, if you planned to buy the Go City Pass Stockholm to visit the various attractions at lowest possible cost, it is also important to note that most activities included in the Go City Pass only open at 10am and close at 5pm. This leaves just 7 hours a day to visit hence, transportation would be vital to maximise this time.
Purchasing and using Stockholm travelcards is an easy process. There are many ways to buy travelcards, either online through the official SL (Stockholm Public Transport) website and application, which allows you to plan ahead and have your card ready upon arrival. Alternatively, they are available at ticket machines and SL Centers located in major metro stations, where you can pay with either cash or card. Also note that convenience stores like Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven also sell travelcards, if you need to purchase a card outside of metro station hours.
Once you have your travelcard, it needs to be activated. If you purchase it online through the application, as we did, you should activate it before the first time you use it. For cards bought at stations or stores, you can activate them at the ticket machines or by swiping them at the entrance of any transport mode. Travelcards are simple to use, just swipe it at the card readers located at the entrances of metro stations, on buses, trams, and boats. There is no need to swipe out when you exit.
The travelcard is valid for the duration you purchased, whether it’s 24 hours, 72 hours, or 7 days. It start from the time of first use. To make the most of your travelcard, you can plan your routes using the SL app or website. This one helps you check schedules and navigate the public transport system efficiently. Additionally, if you’re a student, senior, or traveling with children, check for any available discounts on travelcards to save even more.
There are two different rates for purchasing travelcards, the adult rate and the discounted rate which is reserved for people under 20 years old and over 65 years old but also for Swedish students, in all the other cases, you pay the adult rate. The prices are listed below:
